The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has funded research into microneedle patches, wearable skin implants that deliver quantum dots, microscopic particles that store vaccination records under the skin.
According to the Gates-funded study, these quantum dot markers are designed to remain visible for at least five years, allowing vaccine status to be verified long-term.
The dots (S10C5H QDs embedded in poly(methyl methacrylate) microspheres) can be scanned using specially adapted smartphones, enabling verification outside of clinical settings.
In effect, this technology could serve as a biological vaccine passport, where proving your vaccination status through skin-embedded data might be required for access to public spaces, including travel, grocery stores, or workplaces.
