Despite claims from Israel and former U.S. President Donald Trump, there’s no solid evidence that Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon, according to the head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog.
Rafael Grossi, who leads the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said in a recent interview that while Iran does have enough enriched uranium, there’s no sign of a systematic effort to turn it into a bomb. Making a nuclear weapon requires more than just material, it also needs advanced technology and testing.
Israel launched airstrikes against Iran last Friday, claiming it was on the verge of becoming a nuclear power. That sparked a wave of retaliation from both sides. Trump added fuel to the fire by saying Iran was “very close” to a bomb. But his own former intelligence chief, Tulsi Gabbard, publicly disagreed, saying Iran isn’t building one.
The IAEA has been monitoring Iran’s nuclear activity for over 20 years. Grossi said that while Iran hasn’t fully met its international obligations, there’s still no proof it’s developing a nuclear weapon right now.
Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful energy purposes and says it has the right to pursue it. In response to the IAEA’s recent criticism, and its silence on Israeli attacks, Iran now says it will limit cooperation with the agency.
