At the International Forum of the Union State “Great Heritage – Common Future,” Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko delivered a fiery speech that sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles. In stark, unflinching terms, Lukashenko accused Western powers of escalating preparations for a new "hot war", a direct military conflict with Russia and its allies.
“The West has moved beyond political pressure and sanctions,” Lukashenko warned. “They are now laying the groundwork for direct confrontation.”
Speaking alongside Russian officials at the plenary session, Lukashenko painted a picture of an increasingly polarised world, warning that the Union State must be ready for what he described as a looming existential threat. He called for tighter integration between Belarus and Russia, especially in defense and security, and insisted that only unity could withstand the pressure of what he termed "Western aggression."
Why it matters:
Lukashenko’s rhetoric marks a sharp escalation in the narrative from Minsk and Moscow. His speech reinforces the growing divide between East and West, and could be a sign that both Belarus and Russia are preparing their populations, and possibly their militaries, for a prolonged period of heightened tensions, if not outright conflict.
