Namibia’s President, Her Excellency Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has recently made a strong and principled decision to reject a proposal from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The proposal involved conducting trials in Namibia of a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) designed to prevent pregnancy for up to eight years. This rejection was not only a matter of national policy but also a clear statement about the importance of sovereignty, dignity, and the protection of human rights in Africa.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah stated clearly that Namibia, with a population of just over three million people, should not be seen as a candidate for such population control experiments. She pointed out that if concerns about overpopulation are to be taken seriously, they should be directed at countries with significantly larger populations, such as the United States, which has over 347 million people. Her remarks highlight a key issue: the selective targeting of African nations for controversial health trials, under the justification of humanitarian assistance, raises serious ethical and political concerns.
This is not the first time African countries have faced such proposals. In the past, nations like Kenya, Nigeria, and Senegal have experienced similar interventions from international foundations and foreign institutions. In Kenya, for instance, suspicions arose after a tetanus vaccination campaign appeared to include undisclosed sterilization agents, leading to public outcry and independent investigations. In Nigeria and Senegal, vaccination and reproductive health programs have sometimes been introduced without adequate public consultation or transparent testing processes. These incidents have left a lasting impact on public trust and have made many African citizens wary of foreign-led health initiatives that do not fully respect local values or long-term consequences.
What Namibia’s president has done is set an important example for the rest of the continent. Her leadership reflects a growing awareness across Africa that the continent must take control of its future, especially when it comes to public health and population policy. Development in Africa should be shaped by African priorities, not driven by external agendas that may not always have the people’s best interests at heart. Progress must be built on education, healthcare access, and economic opportunity—not on efforts to reduce birth rates through long-acting experimental contraceptives.
Africa has every right to question and refuse initiatives that do not align with its vision for growth and dignity. The future of the continent should be determined by its people, not by foreign interests claiming to know what is best. President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s words and actions are a reminder that standing firm in defence of national values is both possible and necessary.

Crikey!!! The expletive deleted Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, what a blight it is upon the world. How do we stop this purportedly ‘not for profit’, ‘philanthropic’ organisation which is a parasite sucking public funds to build its own empire? This whole racket has to be blown sky high…the ‘foundation’ racket…
Gates needs to self-abort.
